Hello Adrien,
Well, I guess its time to shut a message at tech support. They
know me too well, though. Oh well. That's correct, though, I do
not have a pc. I only have note takers.

Hi Kim

I forgot that, I don't think Rajmond has a pc, that is going
to cause him problem, it may be useful if he phones
humanware support, the number Rajmond is 01933 415800. They
can also be e-mailed.

Regards

Adrien

Hi Rajmond,

Just to add to what Adrian said below, be sure when you
obtain the file
containing the Stream firmware, to put it on the root of the
SD card,
not in any of the $VR folders. That way, the Stream should
recognize it
and update your firmware without issue.

Enjoy your new Stream! And welcome to the list.

Warmest,
Kim

 Hi Rajmond

The pitch for the user guide and the pitch on the stream
itself are separate, if you change the pitch to listen to
a
book, it does not affect the pitch for the user guide,
they
are completely separate, this is not a bug but an
intentional thing in the design of the stream. You don't
need to clean the sd card off to up-date the stream,
download the file, copy it to the sd card, put the sd card
back into the stream, plug the stream into the mains
electricity and power the stream back on, it will up-date.
If you get stuck, give us a shout.

 Hello Tom,
I do have Samantha, but instead of Tom, we have Daniel.
 Once I
get my braille sense back, I will be able to take the data
 off
the sd card, and update the stream, and all that. I
 believe, its
running 3.0.6, if that existed. So far, though, I had no
problems with the speakers. I have one thing, that is
 bugging
me, however. I exit the user guide,
try Daniel, return to Samantha, and reopen the guide.
Even
though the unit says that I'm on pitch 7, she sounds
nothing
 like
pitch 7. So, I then have to lower it, and get it back up.
However, the rate is not effected. Is that fixed in the
new

 firmware?

 Hi, Rajmund.

Well, if it's got Daniel, it's the UK version of the
 firmware. I
 forget now
what the female voice is, but it isn't Samantha. But,
 anyway,
 I'm glad you
found a pitch and speed that you're okay with. It's too
bad
 you
 don't have
a PC. You need to get with someone who has a PC so that
you
 can
 do a couple
of things. The first thing you want to do is make sure
 you're
 running the
last version of firmware written for the old Stream, which
 is
 version 3.5.4.
You can get it on humanware.com in their support section
if
 it's
 not already
up to date. But, other than the crummy little speaker,
the
 original Stream
is a solid piece of equipment. You'll love the way music
 sounds
 on it if
you have a decent set of headphones or powered speakers.
As
 for
 only
getting English out of the thing, maybe it's only the
North
 American
Samantha and Tom version that has the Mandarin Chinese
 serial
 number at the
end when you hit 0 three times quickly without an SD card.

 Hello Tom,
Hmm, this one said interesting things, but only in
English.
 I
think its running English firmware, which uses Daniel
 (sounds
terrible) and Samantha, who isn't that bad, at pitch 7,
and
 rate
 10. Yes, I like high pitches. Thanks for the sd tip, but
currently, I don't have anything that would read my 64 gb
sd
 card
to save the things off it, and I don't have a pc, either.
I
 have
found the user guide, but this is all new to me.

Hi, Rajmund. In addition to what Jim told you, if you're
 talking
 about the
voice that says, "Welcome to Victor Reader" when you power
 it up,
 he's not a
synthesizer. He's Blair Stainton, a Canadian actor. But,
 you
 have either
Samantha or Tom for your other voice. They're Vocalizer
 voices,
 and they
don't sound all that good. The 2nd-gen. Stream uses
 Acapella
 voices Heather
and Ryan if you have the North American English firmware.
 But,
 if you have
the North American English firmware for the 1st-gen.
 Stream,
 it's Samantha
and Tom. But, I don't think you can speed any of the
voices
 up
 except when
 they're reading text to you.

There is a built-in User Guide on the Stream, either
 version.
 Press and
hold the "1" key until you hear "User Guide", then release
 it.
 Once it
comes up, you can navigate through it using the "6" key to
 navigate forward
and the "4" key to navigate backward. You can set various
 levels
 of
navigation by using the "2" and "8" keys.

BTW, before you start trying to put content on an SD card,
 put a
 fresh SD
card in the Stream and it will create the folders
 automatically
 for you.
Then, you can put DAISY books in $VRDTB, MP3 books in
 $VROtherBooks, music
 in $VRMusic, etc.

I hope this helps. I have one of the original Streams,
and
 I
 still love it.
I can't see buying a new one while this one still works.
I
 did
 buy a
Stratus, though, because I liked the bigger speaker and
the
 built-in optical
disc reader. (They call it a CD reader, but it will also
 read
 audio DVDs.
I haven't tried a Blu-Ray disc in it yet, but I kind of
 doubt it
 would read
one of those.) BTW, if you hit the "0" key three times
fast
 with
 no SD card
in it, it will tell you all kinds of interesting things
 about
 your Stream,
including the serial number in Mandarin Chinese. I am not
 kidding.

 Hello all,
Yes, I have never posted here, but I have just got my hand
 on a
stream. question 1. How do I find out what type it is?
No,
 it
hasn't got wifi. And it still uses vocaliser voices, but
 that's
 as far as I got.
Question 2. How do I speed up the main synthesizer, the
guy
 who
reads the menu items? Just to give you an idea where I'm
 wanting
to go, I got the humanware braillenote to rate 16. Is
there
 a
smilar setting with them synths? question 3. How do I
open
 the
bookshelf, and things like that? Do I need to put content
 into it
on an sd card before I can do that?
 Many thanks for any answers
 Rajmund
